Hatha Yoga Techniques

Yoga in its various forms offers a holistic solution concerning a balanced living and fitness of mind, body and spirit. Hatha yoga is the best known yoga in western hemisphere that is why there are so many definitions of Hatha yoga exist today. As illustrated in Indian tradition, Hatha yoga is one of the four principal traditions of Tantric yoga.

Hatha yoga techniques focus on practicing different physical postures (asanas) in addition to breath management (pranayama) in order to rejuvenate the delicate channels, known as nadis. In fact, the techniques of Hatha yoga especially concentrate on the third and fourth steps of Ashtanga Yoga’s eight-fold pathway.

Primary Techniques to Learn

Hatha yoga has two major objectives. The first technique is to practice deeper meditation in which one needs to hold a posture he or she feels comfortable for a longer period of time. An individual needs to practice for longer time in order to attain the inner meditative state.

The second technique is to practice exercises or asanas in order to bring energy and vitality to the body and mind by means of opening nadis. By regularly practicing these yoga techniques, one is able to open the path of Hatha yoga through which the spiritual journey should begin.

While practicing Hatha yoga techniques, performing pranayama is essential in order to master on one’s breathing pattern. If someone is able to master breath, the mastery of mind is within reach to that individual. By the virtue of breathing exercises, the essential life force or flow of prana is controlled rigorously.

The life force is inevitably required in order to progress further through the pathway of advanced Hatha yoga techniques which in turn leads to Samadhi. The air taken during the breathing process restores balance in both of the hemispheres of the brain, which is the ultimate focus of pranayama. The central objective of pranayama concentrates on activating the Kundalini energy.

Philosophy

The Hatha yoga techniques are developed on the basis of five fundamental energies of life symbolized as Khiti (Earth), Apo (Water), Tyej (Fire), Maroot (Air) and Byom (Space). Together these energies form the energetic model representing the absolute potential of life. In order to use Hatha yoga techniques effectively, these five fundamental energies need to be balanced.

Hatha yoga does this simply by incorporating different agencies like asana (posture), vinyasa (association), bandha (energetic), pranayama (breathing exercise) and drushti (mental alertness). Hatha yoga in the form of agencies helps us to freely engage with the dynamism of life by virtue of understanding the spiritual goal of self-acceptance and self-empowerment.
