Consistency is the Wine Ideal Storage Temperature
When you have started to drink wine in a way that crosses over from casual drinker to blossoming aficionado you will start to think about cellaring. You will start to wonder what you are missing out on when the label says that you can cellar a wine. A wine that can be cellared will taste very different from when you first buy it. This is because the time that you allow it to mature will bring out different flavors that were harder to detect when it was younger. For you to enjoy a matured wine it must be cellared at the ideal wine storage temperature.
Below Room Temperature
Usually red wines are served at room temperature, which is judged to be about 65F to 68F. These are actually judged to be safe temperatures for to be cellared at but are not ideal wine storage temperatures. Ideal wine storage temperatures are around 50F to 55F. Storing wine below 50F is fine and you don’t have to worry about your wine turning to ice, it will only do that if the temperature is well below 0 degrees.
A few degrees above 55F is all right too but it not ideal wine storage temperature as the higher the temperature the faster the wine ages. This means that it will have matured earlier than the time stated on the label. There is a plus side to this; you can enjoy the matured wine. Unfortunately the wine will not taste the same as it would if it had been cellared properly. It will lose some of its character and complexity.
Consistency is Key
Consistency is the key to achieving ideal wine temperatures. Wine stored in your kitchen will not enjoy a climate of consistent temperatures. Instead it will experience rising temperatures when you cook or the kitchen heats up in the afternoon. Constant fluctuations in temperature will most definitely hamper your wine’s maturation. The wine will lose its flavor and begin to taste like rusty nails to put it simply.
Humidity
Humidity is another component in keeping wines fresh; humidity will keep the corks from drying out. When a cork dries out it will allow your expensive wine to evaporate. A big no-no. A wine cellar that can keep temperatures constant and humidity levels at the ideal rate will help you cellar your wine so that you can enjoy it in the years to come. Think about consistency and humidity as the most important factors.
