How To Use Wine Glasses
The shape of your wine glasses can considerably affect the perception that you have of the wine itself. Using Wine Glasses
Wine glasses are used for drinking and tasting wine. However, they do need to be used properly as this is an important part of cuisine etiquette. One of the main parts of these glasses that are frequently neglected are the stems. It is proper etiquette to hold on to the wine glass' stem whenever you are drinking from it. This is not just for social or elegance purposes, but it has a scientific purpose in that it has to do with the wine's temperature.
Temperature
Wine's temperature plays a favorable factor in the wine's overall taste. Whenever you hold onto a wine glass' stem you will not affect the wine's temperature. This is because the glass' stem is not directly in contact with the drink. However, if you grasp the glass' bowl, then you would be in direct contact with the wine and thus affect the wine's temperature.
The Shape Of Wine Glasses
The shape of wine glasses also plays an important role. This is because the wine's flavor and aroma is gathered here. You will want to avoid putting the markings of your fingerprints on this part of the glass, which is another reason why you will want to hold onto the glass' stem. Plus, holding onto the stem makes it easier for you to twirl the wine in the wine glasses.
There are basically 3 types of wine glasses: champagne flutes, red wine glasses and white wine glasses.
Red wine glasses have a wider and rounder bowl. This is what gives the wine a way in which it is able to breathe. Plus, this design also allows the wine to be able to cool quickly once it has been in contact with your warm hand. There are both Bordeaux and burgundy glasses available for your enjoyment of red wine.
White wine glasses are narrower than those that are used for red wine. Their sides are either tulip-shaped or straight so that the chilled white wine is able to hold the correct temperature. On the other hand, champagne glasses are tall and have a narrow bowl on the top so that this sparkling wine will remain desirable whenever it is being consumed.
Of course, the ISO has taken the time to standardize those glasses that are used for wine tasting. Such glasses are stemmed and have tapered, elongated bowls that will hold either 410, 300, 210 or 120 milliliters of wine.
