Putting Together a Discount Wine Gift Basket

The best discount wine gift basket is the one you make yourself with gourmet products you find at your local grocery store.

The Basket

Every discount wine gift basket starts with a basket. Here, it is perfectly acceptable to re-gift a basket that you received as part of a gourmet gift assortment, or to use some other container that you already have on hand.

It's okay to get creative with your choice of basket. Use seasonal themes like red for the holiday season or Valentine's day or pastels for spring; use a bushel basket if you want to include a lot of ingredients in your basket, or multiple bottles of wine. You can find empty baskets at virtually any craft store, and they are quite inexpensive.

The Wine

Most grocery stores that carry wine have an area where they keep discounted bottles of wine – close outs or wines that, for whatever reason, were not very popular. The close-out section is a great place to purchase discounted wine for your gift basket. You can often find excellent wines at 25% to 50% off their retail price.

Get to know the wine manager at your local specialty grocery store and find out when the store moves its stock from full-price shelves to the discount area. During the gift-giving season, be sure to visit the store early on those days and get the very best selection of newly discounted wines for your gift baskets.

The Food

Adding food to your discount wine gift basket is fun, because your imagination is the only limit as you add items to the basket that focus on a theme. For a pasta dinner wine basket, include a package of dried pasta, jars or cans of dried tomatoes, stewed tomatoes and olives, and dried basil, along with a bottle of red wine.

Red wine and dark chocolate makes for a simple, healthy discount wine gift basket. An appetizer wine basket might include white wine, red wine, and a variety of crackers, crisps, cheeses and savory spreads.

Pull out all the stops for a full blown gourmet discount wine gift basket. Include a bottle of red, a bottle of white, and a bottle of rose wine, along with mixed nuts, pretzels, smoked salmon, dried fruit, cookies, biscotti, crackers, and cheese spread.

The Utensils

To complete your discount wine gift basket, include a set of spreading knives, some cheese plates, a serving tray, two to six wine glasses, and a corkscrew.
