Monterey, California, like many bay cities in California, is aesthetically impressive, historically interesting, and progressively sound. Of the hundreds of locations I have visited on both the East and West coasts, I find that Monterey, California is the perfect place. It is the absolute ideal place to visit, to play, to shop, to walk, to study, and, for those of us lucky enough, to live.

Our first afternoon/night in Monterey, California, we dumped our luggage, jumped on the beds, changed clothes, and headed to the conference center where we were astounded by the capaciousness, cleanliness, and accommodating nature of the Steinbeck Forum Theatre—where we had a main meeting. We were to dress up and dance in style and natural and glamorous surroundings of the De Anza Ballroom the next night; and the following morning, were in awe at the absolutely magnificent sunrise colors of peaches and pinks and unique blues over the Monterey Peninsula walkways…where we were doing our regimented but delightful, in this case, jogging.

The afternoon was full of smaller meetings, but when we could, we slipped into Monterey, California proper. There, we were so impressed with the quaint and classy shops and eateries, that we extended our stay to another day, so we could return to the town. That last day, besides having a fabulous homemade biscuit and marmalade breakfast, and besides enjoying the arts and shops, we stopped at the Monterey Bay Aquarium (where I saw my first live jelly fish, those which glow in the dark sea depths!) and checked out the Cannery Row that Steinbeck, as he did for much of Monterey, California, and other coastline towns, made famous and did justice to with his exquisitely accurate detail—detail that still existed in many respects, in the sand and sea and skies of what I feel is one of the most beautiful, accessible, and wonderful places in the U. S.. I need to get one of those bumper stickers that has the I heart Monterey, California slogan…until I make my way to living there permanently.
