Weird weather patterns: Layering clothes keeps you covered – or uncovered to suit

Traditionally, with the change of the season, layering clothes allows you to leave for work wearing a sweater and remove it as the day warms. You can do the same thing in winter, wearing a turtleneck under a jumper and piling a big heavy sweater and a knit scarf over the whole outfit to keep you cozy on a brisk walk to work. You get to the warm office and remove the scarf and heavy sweater and you're just comfortable. The same goes for boots. Carry some pumps in an over sized bag and change when you get to work.

However, these days, we see some strange, unseasonal weather conditions that make a good case for layering clothes year around. You never know when a summer thunderstorm will pop up, especially in the Southeast, or a cold front in the Northwest that moves in so fast you'll be freezing in your sun dress because that weather guy was 100% wrong. At least today he was. You should have at least one stylish, goes-with-everything nylon jacket in the car at all times for these inopportune weather sneakies.

If you're planning an all day excursion with the kids, layering clothes just makes good sense. It may be nippy in the morning when you leave home and very warm by noon. Light nylon windbreakers provide a good amount of warmth in the early part of the day, but can be tied around the waist or stuffed in a backpack as the day heats up. Thick socks and sneakers will keep you warm and prevent a cold when it's chilly. When the socks become a liability, toss them in a plastic bag and into your backpack. If the day really warms up, you can exchange those sneakers for flip-flops stored in your handy backpack.

Layering clothes is an art. If you're taking the kids to the boardwalk, they may be comfortable playing in the arcades in sweatpants in the morning. When they're ready to head out to the beach, off come the sweatpants to reveal a swimsuit beneath. Spray on the sunscreen and there's no time wasted. Kids are notorious for needing bathroom visits at the oddest times, but when you layer clothes, the privacy of the bathroom isn't required, so you don't come home missing three shoes and a pair of sweatpants.

When layering clothes on kids, the only drawback is that it's usually Mom who's carrying the backpack around all day. However, the up side is that the clothes you left home with come home too, the kids don't come down with colds and managed to expend the maximum amount of energy during that fun-packed trip.
