Fog Lights
I have two huge pet peeves when it comes to driving. Perhaps I should say when it comes to other drivers there are two things that I find incredible rude. I’m not sure if these folks just aren’t thinking about the other people on the road, or if they just don’t realize how incredible rude and annoying they really are. One thing that drives me nuts is the person who thinks they don’t need to bother using a turning signal to let you know they are cutting in front of you, and the other is the person that uses their fog lights when there is no fog anywhere to be found. I can’t choose which one I find more annoying, but lately I have noticed that more and more cars are coming with fog lights, and more and more people think they have a right to use them whenever they want. Fog lights are meant to help drivers see when there is fog. Visibility is rather low when you drive through fog, and the extra light can help a driver see where they are going. These lights, however, are not meant to give you extra light on clear nights. Why not? I’ll tell you why not. They blind drivers coming towards you whether you realize it or not.
Fog lights are generally below the regular lights on a car or truck, and they are often just as bright. This does not mean you can use them whenever you want. Using your fog lights in addition to your regular lights on a clear night is akin to leaving your high beams on when you are coming at someone. Not only does this leave the person coming towards you momentarily unable to see in front of them, it screws up their vision for a few seconds after you pass. This is all that it takes for an accident to occur.
This is becoming more and more of a problem, and I hope that the reason for this is that most drivers just don’t realize what they are doing. They should know that doing this could cause the person coming at them to drive right into them. There is a reason why high beams should not be used when someone is coming towards you in the other lane and why they should not be used when you are following someone. Fog lights are the same. If you insist on using your fog lights to blind me when I’m coming your way, don’t be surprised if I suddenly decide I want to use my high beams to let you know that you have blinded me. I usually have my daughter in the car with me, and her life is more important than your wish to have extra light in front of you as you drive. Think about it and turn off the fog lights, please.
