Income tax information — never ignore a letter from the IRS

Letters from the IRS need to be taken care of without delay. People sometimes think the issue will get lost in the system if they just ignore it. Ignoring a notice from the IRS is a huge mistake. Whatever it’s about, failure to reply as indicated will only make things worse. If you do not cooperate or answer requests from the IRS, they have the right to take you to court. I don’t have to tell you the rest.

Contrary to what many taxpayers think, the IRS isn’t out to get you. They are commissioned by law to carry out a job and they do it to the best of their ability. You can manage virtually any situation with the IRS—even reduce your unpaid tax debt to a fraction of what you owe—by treating IRS employees and agents with respect and consideration. Insulting an IRS employee is a sure-fire formula for triggering an aggressive attitude on the part of the IRS. Here are some simple tips for handling routine inquiries:

* The IRS may ask you to schedule an appointment to clarify specific income tax deductions claimed on your return. They will indicate what specific income tax information they want to see. You can expect to receive several notices if you ignore the first one. If you continue to ignore the IRS notices, they will disallow the deductions and assess the additional tax.

* You have nothing to gain by ignoring a notification from the IRS. Get professional income tax information if you need it, but act immediately. Ignoring a notice will make your position weaker. It will cost you in the end.

* If it’s going to hurt, you might as well get it over with as soon as possible. Treat correspondence from the IRS as if it were root canal work. Putting it off only prolongs your suffering. Get the income tax information you need and take care of it at once.
