Over the years, women have carried various types of handbags, in which to carry personal items deemed necessary to have with them when they leave the house. Keys, cosmetics, money and a holder for their identification are often kept in their purse as well as any other personal item they think might be needed while away from home. The style and size of the handbag being carried varies greatly, depending on the taste of its owner and the amount of items they carry.

Sizes can vary from a small handbag used for only the bare necessities and is held in the hand, usually called a clutch to exceptionally large purses used to hold nearly everything they or their companions might ever need. Materials used when making a handbag can also vary greatly, from real leather to cloth as well as beads and even plastic. Resultantly, prices also range from a couple of dollars to designer bags that can cost several thousand dollars.

In some societies the need for a woman to carry a handbag is more prevalent than in others. In the United States, more women will carry some sort of purse in which to carry their personal belonging than in many other countries. Small change purses for coins and a few bills may be carried along with personal identification by a few, but usually only for a night out.

There are a few women who carry purses with virtually nothing inside, simply for the purpose of having a handbag on their arm or over their shoulder. They can use their purse to carry more than personal items, including things needed for their job or profession, but for the most part try to limit its content to items specifically needed for the occasion.

Designer bags, often considerably more expensive than those mass produced and considered off the rack, are well-known for their quality and workmanship, which justifies the higher price tags. Having a handbag designed by a famous designer also increase the price and when coupled with the typical quality of a designer handbag, the price goes up significantly.

For security, many carry a handbag with longer handles that they can hold over their shoulders, hoping to prevent theft of their personal items, including information. Small bags are easier to conceal under the arm, but larger bags become a target for thieves and need to be securely by their handles or by holding them close to their body.
