The Many Varieties Of Italian Food
When you think of Italian food, you probably picture red and white checkered table cloths, bowls heaped with spaghetti and meatballs, some red wine and loaves of Italian bread. However, there is much more to Italian food than just spaghetti and meatballs. Italians also take pride in their veal, their sausage, their salads and much more. It really all depends on the area of Italy you visit, as different areas are known for different types of cuisine. You can't go wrong with a good Italian food cookbook, however, as that will give you a great idea of the true versatility of the Italian style of eating. Pastas
Italians are of course known for their pasta. There are many different types of pasta and there are even more ways to prepare pasta dishes. There is pene pasta, which is like a tubed pasta, there is straight pasta, there is lasagna, which is basically sheets of pasta, and more. The sauce that goes on the pasta can be red or white depending on the ingredients and, if prepared correctly, each type is extremely delicious. If you like to cook and you have a craving for Italian food, try to make several different types of pasta dishes in order to find your favorite. That is if you can choose just one.
Many of the Same Ingredients
Italian food uses many of the same ingredients in the various dishes. Tomatoes are often used, as are many Italian spices, such as oregano. It is also common to see olives used in Italian cooking, as well as wine and many different types of cheeses. Again, it all depends on what area of Italy the dish originated. What they eat in the South, such as Sicily, will differ greatly from what they eat in Venice, for instance.
Authentic Restaurants
If you don't like to cook or don't know how, you can always go to an Italian restaurant where you can have the food prepared for you. It's a real treat when you find an authentic Italian restaurant as opposed to the commercialized places that sell Italian/American food. If you do happen to find an Italian food restaurant that's authentic, you'll see how Italians truly eat and you'll know then why Italians are known for many things but their especially known for their cooking. Don't forget to try the wine with food, either, as a good red wine can make any Italian food stand out.
