Many independent record labels have risen up and taken a hold of some of what was once the territory of major record labels. They have secured deals with artists that have gone on to great success. These small labels don’t have the financial backing the larger ones have, but sometimes, it is not needed. If a band is good, and I mean really good, magical things can happen. The Internet has allowed smaller bands not back by major record labels to breakout into the public eye. Places like Myspace have made it easier than ever for bands to get their music noticed by the public, and it is a very cheap and easy way to do so. While major record labels have a variety of resources they can use for publicity and they know how to back an album, they are no longer the only game in town.

For some bands, getting the attention of major record labels is darn near impossible. This is often a matter of geography, as there aren’t a lot of representatives from the major record labels hanging out in Utah these days, though, you never know. Instead, these bands sign with an independent label. They may have huge success with this label, and feel the need to go no further, or they can try to use this success to get the attention of one of the majors.

If you want to get the attention of one of the major record labels, you should know that sending in a demo tape rarely works. Many won’t listen to unsolicited material, and they will simply throw it away. Instead, get out there, find a manager with some experience, and work your butt off. The more you play, and the further you go on your own, the better your chances of being found. Even if your efforts don’t get you what you want with the major record labels, you may find that you are making good money and that you are having too much fun doing what you love to care.
