74 islands make up the Whitsunday Group of Islands off the coast of Queensland in Australia. Whitsunday Island is the largest of the group and is a very popular tourist destination. It is ideally situated as a base from which to explore the surrounding area. The scenery is outstanding and there are opportunities to try new sports and watch wildlife. Renting a scooter is a convenient way of getting round the islands.

One of the most popular spots is Whitehaven Beach; noted for its miles of white, silica sand and clear, blue sea. Access to the beach is by boat and seaplane. Visitors can enjoy a scenic walk and lovely views at the northern tip of the island at Hill Inlet. Various day trips and activities are organized round the Whitsunday Island group, including quad bike riding through rain forest. Horseback riding is on offer too with the unusual bonus of instruction in horse whispering.

Whale watching is another favorite activity and there are lots of locations for scuba diving and snorkeling. Helicopter trips over the Whitsunday Island area are a great way of seeing all the islands. A more leisurely alternative is to charter a yacht or catamaran, with or without a crew. It's also possible to rent a kayak or go on a game fishing trip with an expert guide. There are plenty of water sports available, including parasailing and jet skiing.

Trips are also organized to one of the most famous natural wonders in the world, to the Great Barrier Reef. The colorful coral is a precious resource and visitors are asked to treat it with great care. A day out to the Proserpine River gives an exciting chance to see crocodiles in the wild and to go on a tractor ride through the wetlands.

Golfers are in for a treat when they visit the Turtle Point golf course at Laguna. It has been voted the best public course in Queensland and is a major contributor to tourism in the Whitsunday Island group. The championship 18-hole course has one of the most scenic settings in the world, going through rainforest, bushland and the coast of the Coral Sea. There is a floodlit putting green, chipping green and a practice bunker.

There are a range of facilities besides golf, including a 40m swimming pool, a croquet lawn and three floodlit tennis courts. Water sports are available, such as windsurfing, sailboarding and canoeing. A nature trail goes through the bushland, a haven for many different species of animals and birds.
