Bank Account Information

You may already know that you have to protect your social security number, but do you know how important it is to guard your bank account information? Now that online banking is more common, there are more and more ways that thieves can steal your money. They only need to find out your information along with your password in order to get into your online bank account and wipe you out. It’s becoming a common tale and it is happening because most consumers don’t realize how easy it is to clean them out.

I remember what happened to me when someone got a hold of my bank account information. This wasn’t done over the Internet, but it may as well have been. I was scammed over the phone and they talked me into handing over my bank account information for a credit card that did not exist. Luckily for me I realized what had happened within a day, and I did what I had to do to stop them from cleaning me out. I had to close my bank account, but it could have been worse.

Unless you are dealing with a company that you know very well, you should never give out your bank account information. You may want to get something online for a payment, but you should make sure they are a real company before you hand over your bank account information for any type of service. Always check with the Better Business Bureau to make sure before you give your bank account information to anyone at any time. If you aren’t sure, don’t do it.

If you ever get an email asking you to submit your bank account information, any passwords, or PINs for any reason, you should call that institution on the phone. Never click on a link given to you through an email. These emails are made to look like they come from eBay, PayPal, or your bank. They ask for any sort of information they need in order to access your accounts. If you give them your bank account information, you can expect to be cleaned out rather quickly. As a rule, none of those places will ever ask you for missing information, to update your information, nor will they alert you to a problem through email. Don’t fall for it.

In the event that you have given your bank account information to someone that you should have avoided, make sure you contact your bank at once. They may be able to freeze your account, or you may have to close it right away. You may end up with a few payments or checks bouncing, but that is far better than leaving your accounts open so that a thief can clean you out. You should guard your bank account information like you guard your social security number and your credit card numbers. You should always err on the side of caution.
