A lot of people think that the scientific method does not apply to them at all. Students believe that, unless they are going to be scientists, knowing all about scientific theories and experiments is really just a waste of their time. Nothing could be further from the truth, and students need to understand this fact. The scientific method is one of the most important things that you learn in school. It teaches you about logical thinking, forming educated guesses, and investigating problems that you come across. No matter what you plan to do with your life, these are skills that will come in handy time and time again. Scientific methods and training teach you to be a good student, a good thinker, and a good citizen.
The concept of a scientific theory, in fact, is one of the most important ideas in the world today. A lot of the debate around evolution centers around some people not really understanding this concept. Evolution is called a “theory,” but it is a scientific theory – something different from a normal hypothesis. The scientific method never acknowledges facts. Instead, it comes up with hypotheses, tests them, and if they can not be disproven, comes up with a theory to explain them. A theory, therefore, is a pretty sure bet. It is the closest thing a scientist has to a “fact.” The scientific method is a good way to help students understand the differences between casual opinions and informed opinions backed up by research and fact. Anyone can say that he or she believes anything, but the scientific method teaches you how to investigate your beliefs and see if they hold up to evidence. In the science class that I teach, we do not only do experiments involving physical science. We also use the scientific research methods that I teach to solve crimes scenes, logic puzzles, research papers, and other topics that I invent to help the students to think logically. Once they realize that scientific thought has a place in English, history, and their other classes, they start to see how important it really is! Of course, the scientific method does have some limits. It is good for many things, but there are some things that it can not address. Meaning, morals, and artistic judgments all fall outside the realm of science. They can be studied and compared scientifically, but they still have to come from somewhere inside. Aside from that, however, science is good for pretty much everything.
