For many of us, our youth was filled with devotion to intelligent games. Some of us loved science and chemistry, and carried this love for acuteness of intelligence into the games we played. Since the invention of the game, chess has been a favorite past time of millions of people around the world. Demonstrating our logistic and reasoning abilities, we spent hours upon hours in chess combat, trying to better our opponent. When we won, a certain flood of emotions proclaiming victory overtook us. But while we played the game, a certain pensive feeling was always there. It was edgy, in a way. The chess clock sitting quietly by the side was watching, recording every millisecond that it took for us to make our move. This convenient device, the chess clock added another dimension to the game. Time was now a factor. A chess clock is just as valuable today as it was 50 some years ago, with its precise measurement of time recording each player's use of time.

So, if you're going to play a game of chess, why not play it to the fullest extent possible? That extra dimension that we spoke of is available only through a chess clock. A chess clock is quite similar to a stop watch. The basic structure consists of a box, which can be made from any number of materials, and two stop watches. Two buttons protrude from the top, waiting for a play to enthusiastically press them. A button or switch is also placed on the box, which is first turned on at the beginning of the game.

When a player is to make his or her first move, they first turn the chess clock on, and promptly begin the game. Afterwards, when the move is completed, the button on their side of the box is pressed. The clock will stop dead in its tracks, telling you exactly how long that move took.

When the next person is to make their move, they start the clock differently then the first player. Instead of pressing the “on” button, they press the button on top of the box. After this, the clock will begin ticking.

The objective of those using a chess clock is simple: beat the other person's time. As the game comes to a close, you will both be sure to check the clock, to see who has more accumulated time. Most glorious is to have both won the game, and have less time on your clock.
