Boston Museum Of Science

Boston is a city with many attractions and one of the most popular ones for adults and children is the Boston Museum of Science. The museum opened in its present location in the Science Park on the banks of the Charles River in 1951 and it has expanded over the years with major renovation work undertaken in 2005 and 2006.

There is so much to see and do at this museum. In addition to 500 hands on exhibits, there are shows and live presentations that entertain and inform visitors. The Charles Hayden Planetarium part of the museum opened in 1958. This Museum of Science in Boston also boasts the Mugar Omni Imax Theater. One of the oldest displays is the collection of taxidermed specimens from the earliest days of the museum when game hunters brought in their prizes.

When the city's Computer Museum closed in 1999, some of the exhibits were moved to the Science Museum. Displays include The Computing Revolution, which charts the history of computing. Another popular exhibit is the Cahners Computer Place, containing educational video games and modern innovations, such as a robotic dog.

There are other fascinating exhibits including the Theater of Electricity, which houses the largest Van de Graaf Generator in the world. As well as celebrating past achievements, the Boston Museum of Science displays items at the cutting edge of science and technology. These include the MIT Daedalus human powered aircraft and the Decavitator human powered fast speedboat.

The museum also likes to present science associated with popular culture. With this in mind, staff introduced an exhibition in 2005 called Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination. After a successful launch, it now travels to other venues. The Boston Museum of Science opened its doors to the United States premiere of The Lord of the Rings the Motion Picture Trilogy the Exhibition. This exciting exhibition had traveled form New Zealand where the film was made. Fans of the epic had the opportunity to see props and costumes from the three movies, including various rings from the story. There were also demonstrations of special effects and documentary footage about how the films were shot.

Visitors to the city can obtain a special discounted pass for admission into six Boston attractions. These are the Boston Museum of Science, New England Aquarium, Skywalk Observatory, Museum of Fine Arts, Harvard Museum of Natural History and the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum.
