How to Install Snow Chains
If you have ever wondered how to install snow chains you’ll find that it is a fairly easy process to do it yourself. There are several ways to install snow chains on your own or with some help. Let’s assume you have already ruled out pulling into a garage and letting them put them on for you. The first step is to use the correct size chains for the tire you are going to put them on. If that is the case, then you need a safe place to work in while attaching the chains to your rear tires. The side of a busy highway is not ideal, but many drivers get caught in that circumstance, so be careful. If you had a floor jack, a tarp and some cardboard sheets this would make installing snow chains easier to do. Jack up one of the rear tires and slide a cardboard sheet under the tire. Lay out the chains along side of a rear tire. Notice which side of the chains are the inside row and which side is the outside row. Pick up the chains and drape them over the tire, with the tire as center in the chain set, side-to-side. Click the backside chains together and then the front after assuring the chains are equal on each side of the tire.
The chains should now be attached to the tire and running in the same direction, as the tire will rotate. Use the spring tighteners to take up any slack in the chains. Remove the cardboard, lower the car and do the other side the same way. If you were smart you would have made sure the chains were sized and fit for your car before doing this the first time. You would have several broke-down boxes in the trunk for just this purpose. Sized chains and cardboard to kneel on make this job quite a bit easier. Happy winter driving.
