Notary Public

I have used a notary public several times in my life. A notary public is a person who serves as an impartial witness when signing a document. Sometimes a document you sign may require the seal and validation of a notary public. Other times, you may wish to have a notary public witness and seal the document for you own peace of mind.

Many people wonder where they can find the services of a notary public. I have found the easiest place to engage the services of a notary public is at my bank or credit union. I am a credit union member, and so the service of a notary public has also been provided as a benefit of credit union membership. I have not needed to pay a fee for the notary public’s services.

When you go to the notary public, you should be prepared. I will have several copies of the documents I want to sign with me. That way, I can also have several notarized copies available. The notary is an impartial witness and can sign the document as such a witness. However, the notary public also serves in a role that authenticates the signing of the document. As I sign the document, the notary public will examine my signature with my signature that is on my identification. Usually, I will provide my driver’s license to the notary public for comparison. Once, I signed, and my signature was verified by the notary public, the notary public would sign and then place his or her notary seal on the document signed.

Sometimes a notary public can also witness or even administer oaths and affirmations. When I needed to complete the application for my passport in person, I needed to take an oath saying I was who I said I was. I also needed to swear that the information on the application was true. That oath was witnessed by a notary public, who then stamped and sealed my application.

If you need to find a notary public, many banks and financial institutions have notary publics on site available during business hours. You can also find notary public’s available from online directories or even the business pages of the phone directory.

Each state has its own rules governing who can be a notary public and what papers and fees are required. You can contact your state’s government for more information about the rules for notary publics in your state.
