How Companies Use Manufacturing Data Collection

It is very important for manufacturing companies to keep accurate reports of how many products are being made, compared to man hours put in, and materials used; reports which include all this information are known as manufacturing data reports. Companies can use the information retrieved from these manufacturing data collection reports to modify supply and productivity to meet demand.

The Job

Often an actual person will be assigned the task to manually travel the plant and retrieve the data from the actual people making the products; this person will consult the lead or supervisor for each department and ask for their total numbers in employees, materials, and finished products. This person will then take that information and compare it to what the computers which operate the lines have colleted, correct any information that has shown to be incorrect, and finally compose a manufacturing data collection report.

Chain of Command

This manufacturing data collection report is then submitted to a manager or foreman to inspect the progress of the day, often at least twice a day, so the foreman can determine if productivity need increase, decrease, or remain constant. The records of these manufacturing data collection reports are often kept for a minimum of thirty days hard copy, and up to seven years on disk.

Application

Companies also compile manufacturing data collections reports to configure their equipment; most equipment within factories is run by a computerized logic controller known as a PLC. These PLC’s are so precise that they are used for most every industry across the board; a company can use the information gathered by the manufacturing data collection reports to determine if any adjustment to the speeds or repetitions at which they operate is needed.

Some companies will even schedule their training and vacation times based on these reports; the manufacturing data collection report can indicate the slower production times of the year therefore indicating the best time for employees to take some needed times off of work. Also it could tell the human resource department at which times of the year they may need to hire temporary employees to supplement their existing work force.

Manufacturing data collection reports can be an essential part of running a large manufacturing plant as it allows a small group of people to know exactly what is going on through out the large plant area. These specially trained people or groups of people are able to use a combination of communication skills and technology to help a company work as efficiently as possible.
