Journal writing
After reading the amazing book by James Patterson, called 'Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas', I was incredibly inspired. I wiped my tears away and tiptoed into my daughter's bedroom to watch her sleeping. It was at that particular moment of my life, that I decided to take up journal writing. Because of the book that I'd just read, which every parent should read, I wanted to keep a journal for my daughter. Before I even left her bedroom, I knew that my journal writing would be something that I would continue for years. Afterall, what if something did happen to me? How would this toddler ever know how much she was loved or how much I cared about her? I needed to put my thoughts and feelings down by journal writing so that someday she could read it and know a bit about herself and me as well. Taking up journal writing was something I decided to pursue the very next morning. I went to Borders bookstore and bought a beautiful hardcover journal. As she took her afternoon nap, my journal writing began. I wanted her to know all about how I fell in love with her before she had ever even been born. She needed to know that I'd dreamed about her my entire life. And with that emotion inside of me, it just started to pour out through journal writing.
Years before I was married and even thinking about bringing a child into this world, I was a counselor. One of the things that we used to focus on for the patients was ways to express themselves. Journal writing was the absolute best way to do that. When you are journal writing, you can say anything that you want to say. If it is a private journal that is only meant for your eyes, it can be wonderful to get your thoughts out and perhaps come to some realizations about yourself and your life. Journal writing can be a great way to overcome many obstacles and find some focus for yourself. You can write things that you wish you could say to others but know that you cannot. You can spill your wildest dreams and your biggest fears. Journal writing is an excellent way to let everything inside of you be released in order to move forward or feel better about things.
In college, a sociology class that I took required us to do some journal writing. We were to pick either a bad habit that we wanted to break or something that we wanted to change about ourselves. After identifying it through journal writing, we needed to work on overcoming it. Our professor wanted for us to be able to change this part of ourselves by journal writing. While it was a great thought and assignment, it didn't necessarily work for me. However, for some students in my class, it did work. While I'm not saying that journal writing can solve all of your problems and be a substitution for therapy, it could end up changing your life. Or, for me - end up changing my daughter's life.
