Although you can get a trademark registered yourself, I would strongly advise you to get a trademark attorney. I'm not saying this just because my cousin is a trademark patent attorney! You see, I tried to do it the hard way. I figured that I would go through all of the trademark registration on my own. I was pretty poor the time, but I had made an invention that I thought could make me millions. In retrospect, I was pretty naive. Although I was able to file a trademark patent registration, I didn't really do it right. I wasn't clear enough about what aspect of my invention I was panting, and as a result it wasn't really well protected. When another company started producing something very similar, I was pretty much out of luck. I didn't have a trademark lawyer, and the case was not clear-cut enough that I could be sure that my invention was not in jeopardy. As a result, I've been in court with them for years, and the verdict is still not in.

The real problem is that many young investors are kind of impulsive, flighty types. As a result, you might not have the money to hire a trademark attorney when you need them most. It is a tragedy, but sometimes the people with the best ideas have the worst business sense. If you find yourself in this position, you might consider selling your invention to an investor. Once you sell it, you won't even need a trademark attorney to protect it anymore, and you will have made a quick buck. This can be a little bit dicey though, particularly if you don't know the legal process very well. Like it or not, the fact is that if you don't know the law and don't have the resources to hire someone who does, you are always going to be at a disadvantage.
