Artists are usually considered a little eccentric. They seem to see the world differently than other people do and their unique perspectives are often reflected through color in art. Current research has found that artists may see things differently than people who do not have artistic inclinations. An artistic person sees more shades of color than someone who is not artistic.

Color in art conveys the way artists translate their surroundings. Vincent Van Gogh is a well-known artist whose interesting, rich perspective on the world is found in the amazing colors found in his artwork. It is that magnificent hues that give us pause when we approach his work. I can think of no artist that parallels Vincent Van Gogh’s unique color schemes and movement.

Starry, Starry Night is one of Van Gogh’s most famous paintings. This magical painting is serene but it seems to almost move through the swirling grays and whites turning on the canvas. His Thirteen Sunflowers is filled with powerful yellow tones and the painting actually lights up a room. These paintings are examples of the impact that color in art has on the onlooker and they are examples of an artist’s unique, colorful view of the world.

Pablo Picasso is a very famous artist of the Twentieth Century whose odd perspective is found through his distorted, two-dimensional images that appear flat on the canvas. The colors that Picasso uses in his artwork are striking and powerful. They convey confidence and strength. Picasso’s color in art reflects mood as well as tone. His color choices tell a story aside from the forms found in the work. The color in his art conveys meaning without needing any shape or form.

Claude Monet is another well-known artist who uses color in art to transform the world around him. His paintings are soft and the colors seem to melt into each other. One of his most famous paintings is Madame Monet and Her Son. This is uses blue as a general hue. The blue sets a backdrop and pale blues swirl into richer colors, deeper shades of blue and into greens and a variety of other subtle colors. The colors in this painting pull the onlooker into the serene scene. The moment is misty, almost like a memory. Monet uses color in art to capture a precious fragment of time forever.

I am moved by the painting of the masters who use color in art to convey meaning, to set a tone and to capture emotion in subtle tones or bright hues. I understand that I may see things a little differently than another person. We are each unique and we each have our own perspective. Artists who have mastered the ability to use color in art to affect others will be remembered through their artwork for generations to come.
