Every part of my life revolves around the written word. In my personal life, I am not only an avid reader, but a writer, currently at work on my own novel. As I have been writing as a hobby since I was very small, the issue of paper storage has always been of paramount importance for me. Without a good way to store papers, they tend to get lost in great numbers. I used to have a paper storage drawer where I would put all of my old notebooks, but that quickly grew to be too limited. I began to use a filing cabinet, but it was just too unseemly and cumbersome. I finally came up with a solution to paper storage issues in my own life. I would put all of my old papers which I was no longer using in storage bins under my bed or in my closet, and then use a small filing cabinet for storing current projects.
My paper storage issues in my professional life have proven a little harder and less easily solved. As a traffic coordinator for a large business, I am in charge of organizing an ungodly number of products, and of always knowing where everything is as well. This can quickly become somewhat of a nightmare scenario, as I am sure that you will imagine. As such, I have to do everything that I can to make sure that paper storage runs as smoothly as possible. At first, this just simply involved organizing a lot of documents in to filing cabinets, but this turned out to not go far enough. People would want to know where everything was at a moments noticed, and that just was not possible when everything was done through hard copy. Finally, although we had dreaded it for a long time, my boss and I decided that we would have to digitize everything. We would use paper storage to provide a backup copy, but we would use archival software to make all of the documents available online. This not only will make them more easy to find quickly, but as a bonus, it will mean that they can be searched through, compared, and manipulated in many ways that are hard, if not impossible, to do when you are only using paper copies. The only problem is that switching from paper storage to computer is almost a nightmare scenario. All in all, I think that I'd almost rather stick with paper storage, but now, I suppose, it is too late.
