the US marines

“The Few. The Proud. The Marines.” That is the calling card of the United States marines. The United States Marine Corps (USMC) is a branch of the U.S. military. The US Marines are one of the smaller branches of the five branches of the US Military which also includes the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard. Currently the US Marines have over 170,000 active and 40,000 reserve personnel.

Once someone has enlisted in the US Marines they must attend boot camp. This is done at two locations, both of which are equipped as recruit training stations: San Diego or Parris Island. Women train only at Parris Island, but men are permitted to train at either location.

The US Marines are trained to be adaptable to many situations and can operate in many different combat operations. Although the US Marines initially were infantry combat forces that served on naval vessels during the Second World War, the US Marines began to develop and engage more in amphibious assault.

The US Marines were created in 1775. Since then, their role has grown. The US Marines mission statement summarizes their resolve. They alone of all the branches of the U.S. armed forces, "shall, at any time, be liable to do duty in the forts and garrisons of the United States, on the seacoast, or any other duty on shore, as the President, at his discretion, shall direct.”

The combat readiness of the US Marines is also their culture. They are dedicated to ensuring that all marines are ready and able to fight. All US Marines are first trained as basic riflemen. In fact, The US Marine Corps is known for this quote "Every Marine is a rifleman."

Recently, the US Marines have spent time in Iraq. They were involved in the Iraq invasion in 2003 and also in the ongoing occupation. In Iraq, a combat ready, very mobile military presence was required and the US Marines did the job. Today, US Marines are still found all over the world, serving to keep the United States safe and secure.

To those who consider serving in the US Marines, a wealth of educational opportunities and training exist. Although the US Marines are known for their physical strength, education is a high priority. Serving in the US Marines can help you find funds to pay for college. Additionally, those who serve are given many opportunities for job relating training and growth.

The US Marines not only helps to ensure the security of the United States of America, it also offers those who serve the resources to develop personally and build a foundation for a strong, future career.
