Army women
Women have played many roles throughout the decades, including positions with the military and in times of war. This doesn’t just hold true for the United States, but for any country. There was a time when women were laughed at if they even thought about being a part of the military. The facts of the matter are that women have played some key roles throughout our country’s military history. They may have started out behind the scenes and lines, or on the nursing front, but they made a difference. Nowadays, it is common for women to join the military. I personally know two army women that have dedicated a huge part of their lives to the army. They are both determined and strong-willed, defying any odds that may have been stacked against them. My one acquaintance graduated from high school weighing barely 105 lbs. Her family had no money to offer for furthering her education and she joined the army to ensure that she would have a future. She left for boot camp with long flowing hair and a carefree personality. When she returned home months later, her hair had been neatly cut and she had become a more confident and serious individual. She had become one of the army women that would end up serving her country well. She was in the army for four years and then went on to continue her education. Without being in the military, she would have never made something of herself or discovered the strength she really had. She’s now married and has a lovely family.
My other female friend who also joined the ranks of army women to serve our country has decided to make a career out of it. Though she joined for the sole purpose of seeing the world and getting a better education, becoming friends with other army women has changed her life. She’s steadily continued to rise in ranks and loves feeling so powerful and important. She knows who she is and what she is made of. I admire that.
Most army women do enter the military hoping for a new life or to ensure a better future. It isn’t easy to have a family and be in the military when you’re a woman. It is more acceptable for the husbands to go off to war and serve their tours than it is for the wives who may be mothers. Many army women don’t even get married or think about having children. Others try to balance all of it. There really should be a better way for the military to help army women and all women in the military to be able to balance having a family and serving our country. Maybe someday, that will work itself out.
