Understanding the yeast infection

Let's face it, having a vaginal yeast infection is something that every girl goes through at least once in their life and most females experience it several times throughout their life. And while having a yeast infection in no way has anything to do with how clean someone is, it can be an extremely embarrassing thing to deal with and talk about if there is not information known about it. The more information that is known about the yeast infection, the less there is to be ashamed of or to be embarrassed of.

Now keeping in mind that the common symptoms for a yeast infection could also be signs of something else, it is important to always talk with your doctor about what you are experiencing to get the best diagnosis. But the main symptoms for a vaginal yeast infection are itching, burning, soreness, vaginal discharge, pain during urination, and pain during intercourse. Of course, you do not have to be experiencing all of the symptoms in order to be suffering from a yeast infection as you may notice only one or two signs.

Getting Proper Treatment

Once a lot of women understand what to look for in terms of a yeast infection and have experienced it before, they often go ahead and reach for over the counter medications to treat the problem without seeking assistance from a doctor. These over the counter creams and medications are applied topically and will treat most yeast infections. But when those medications and creams no longer do the trick, a doctor should be seen to further examine and to make sure that it is indeed yeast that is the problem and that it is not something else that needs attention.

If it is and over the counter medicines are not working, there are some vaginal tablets that can be given by the doctor. And in some cases, there are oral medications that can be given for a yeast infection but most doctors do not let to give those as they cause side effects. These side effects are abdominal pain, headaches, and nausea and none of these have really been seen from using the vaginal tablets. Keep in mind though, pregnant women cannot use the oral medications and should make sure that they are not pregnant before using those medications for the treatment of a yeast infection. Make sure that you talk with you doctor about symptoms before trying to treat them yourself.
