What Are Chronic Cold Sores And How Can You Get Rid Of Them?

The difference between people who suffer from cold sores and chronic cold sores is that the former would expect less number of outbreaks and the infection would be milder than the latter. Not only people with chronic cold sores are resistant to medication, but also will experience the problem at regular intervals.

Be Careful Not To Transmit The Infection To Your Dear Ones

Chronic cold sores are causes by the HSV-1 or herpes simplex virus, which is normally contacted through sexual contact or direct contact with an active sore. The symptoms that show you are infected are mostly the appearance of moist and very painful blister-like sores around the mouth. That is about all.

Be careful to contain the infection by limiting your contact with other people to the maximum extent possible. Do not kiss anyone (on lips or cheeks) as this infection is highly contagious and can easily be passed on with the kiss. Avoid any type sexual contact, especially oral sex as the virus could infect your partner and develop into genital herpes. Be consistent with your medication as any interruption could cause the virus to grow stronger and more difficult to fight off.

The Treatment For Chronic Cold Sores

There are many medications which are used symptomatically to alleviate the pain and discomfort. Since there is no cure for viruses, you need to wait it out and hope that your body gets the needed strength to overcome it sooner than later. In the meantime you could use any of the prescribed ointments that keep the lips moist and reduce the pain considerably. Neosporin has been found to be very popular on this aspect.

Many of the OTC (over the counter) ointments for chronic cold sores contain camphor. You need to know that camphor can be harmful when used by children below 13 years of age. Consult your medical practitioner before applying any OTC ointment on children below 13 years of age to be sure you are not contributing to more grief.

Prevention Is Always Better Than Cure

Of course, prevention is always better than cure. Since this virus is highly contagious the only way you could prevent it is by avoiding close contact with anyone who has an active outburst. In case you do touch the person, ensure you wash your hands with a strong antiseptic. It has also been observed that people with a strong immune system are more resistant to this virus; therefore you need to take measures to strengthen your immune system with adequate health supplements as prescribed by the doctor.
