Thank you cards have not gone out of style!

In today's society, we've seen a rather egregious relaxing on some of the rules of etiquette. We're not talking about being castigated for failing to pick up the right spoon at a formal dinner. Too often, people don't even bother to send a simple thank you card or electronic thank you message for a kindness done or a gift received. This is not an omission due to lack of experience in formal dining, it's just plain rude and thoughtless! It's time we brought this simple custom back into the mainstream. Unfortunately, many adults are guilty of this and our kids just follow suit.

Remember when your Mom would sit you down with paper and pen and order you to write a thank you card to Aunt Betty? You wrote your Aunt, telling her that her thoughtful gift was just what you wanted, along with a few newsy lines, followed by a reiteration of thanks, a "Love you!", and your signature. Off it went and your Aunt was pleased at your thoughtfulness in your prompt and polite acknowledgment.

Back in those days, all kids were taught from an early age to write their thank you notes within a day or two of receiving a gift. When you had a birthday party, Mom had a box of thank you cards ready to be written and sent to each child attending. Even if everyone did not come with a gift, they were thanked for coming.

Somehow, this little bit of gracious conduct has slipped through the cracks. Although today, some people feel it suffices to make a phone call and thank the gift giver, some people, especially older people, may still feel slighted or unappreciated. Maybe Aunt Betty's memory isn't what it used to be. After your phone call, she may remember your chat on other family news and your inquiries about her health - but she'll be waiting for that thank you card in the mail, which never comes.

For older folks and devotees of proper etiquette, there's just no replacement for a nice, cheery thanks. You can pick up a box of all purpose thank you cards at the greeting card store to have on hand for ready use. Slip a few postage stamps in your box of cards and you're all set.

Electronic cards are a terrific alternative for addressees with a computer and email. Many older people use electronic mail as a way to share news and photos with family members. There are lots of greeting card sites online, with entire categories devoted to the subject of thanking. You can personalize your message with the text of your choice, animations and even musical greetings. Kids and adults alike love sending and receiving these fun and colorful messages.

So, next time you or the kids receive a kindness or a gift from someone, send off a paper or electronic thank you card right away. Good manners are in style.
