Something that seems to confuse a lot of people is marriage annulment because when you look at it generally speaking, you cannot really say that the marriage did not really happen if you really did walk down the aisle and exchanged vows. Most people have a problem with this as it is like being able to pretend you were never married even though you were and then there are those who have to go through a messy and expensive divorce. A good way to understand why someone would want to have a marriage annulment instead of a divorce is better understood by first knowing exactly what it is.

When most people think about a marriage annulment, they think of it being something done only for the church that someone may belong to but that is simply not always the case. A marriage annulment is actually a legal procedure that will end up making the marriage that took place null. There are set grounds for getting a marriage annulment and it cannot be just because the two parties figured out they were not right for each other. Although the grounds for this legal procedure do vary per the state where the couple resides, there are some basic rules that seem to apply everywhere.

Reasons for Annulment

Believe it or not, there are many different reasons for a marriage annulment to be allowed and some of them may even make you stop, think, and really make you wonder how well the two people must have known each other in the first place. If either party finds that the other was already married to someone else, there are grounds for an annulment. There are also the reasons of the couple being too young to legally marry, both or one was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time the marriage took place, or if either one of them were incompetent in terms of their mental well being when they got married.

There are also grounds for a marriage annulment is the marriage was done through force or if the couple is blood related. Also, there may be a marriage annulment if one or the other was incapable of being married, physically, meaning that they were not able to have sexual intercourse. And then there is the fact that if one spouse hid a drug addiction, having a sexually transmitted disease, or a criminal record of some sort, the other is allowed to seek a legal marriage annulment.
