Eye Contact
When you meet new people, there may be nothing more important than having good eye contact. Of course, you can’t forget about dressing neatly and having good personal hygiene, but the eye contact will be right up there on the list. If you don’t look someone in the eyes, they may feel you are shifty or hiding something. On the other hand, if you spend too much time staring directly into someone’s eyes, you may come across as hostile or unapproachable. Eye contact has a way of transmitting what you are thinking without you even realizing that you are saying anything. If you are looking to meet someone you might like to date, you have to keep the eye contact light and flirty, but you don’t want to avoid it altogether. I know when I have been attracted to people in the past I have avoided looking them in the eyes because I was so shy. This really puts a damper on meeting people, and they don’t know you might be interested if you don’t even look at them.
You will find good eye-to-eye connections in business are important as well. You must be confident but you don’t want to stare them down. You want to have good but intermittent contact with the eyes, and you want to keep an open and honest face. People read body language without realizing it, and this is a big part of the impression they may get from you no matter what your mouth is saying. If you use good eye contact, you can build a small amount of trust with your potential clients or customers before you have even said hello.
Don’t forget that to have good eye contact, you have to take care of your eyes. You don’t want to be making eye contact with a man across the room only to find that when you get close, he looks nothing like you thought he did. What you thought was a red pattern on his shirt may turn out to be ketchup if you don’t know what you are seeing. You don’t want to make eye contact with the wrong person. Keep up to date with your eye exams and make sure your contact prescriptions are perfect for your eyes. Otherwise, you never know who you may draw in unintentionally. If you find someone across the room looks nothing like you thought they did, run in and get your eyes checked as soon as possible.
