World War II posters may be considered to be great historical teaching tools for teachers. This era was one like no other. The United States was fighting the war overseas but we were mobilizing on our own continent as well. My grandparents were married right after the end of this conflict and they have shared many memories with me.
I am fortunate to be teaching high school art right now. On of my coworkers is a great high school American History teacher who is covering the 20th century in his class. We have organized lesson plans that coordinate World War II posters with both the subjects of history as well as art. The World War II posters help the American History teacher explain how the war overseas affected the people back home in the United States. Many women began entering the factories and people made a lot of sacrifices to support the cause. This is evident in the World War II posters both through the messages as well as the images.
My side of the coin revolves around the idea that learning about art is also a way of learning about history in general. The World War II posters also serve as icons of the perfect poster art in this era. Actually, it is the most magnificent collection of this genre of art that has ever been created to date in my opinion.
The students will learn about the effects of the war on the home front and they will learn a new style of art as well. The World War II posters will be used in both classrooms in two very different ways. The history teacher will take the perspective of the message behind the art and I will focus on the presentational aspects of the finished product.
Part of the World War II poster assignment will involve students creating their very own posters. The subject can be anything that they are passionate about. This can be anything from their favorite movie to a moving current event. The goal is to capture the passion and beauty that exist in the World War II posters.
I hope that the collaboration works out well. It is sometimes difficult to work in sync with another teacher but using teaching tools like the World War II posters helps to bring classrooms together. Using one tool for multiple subjects is a great way to reinforce concepts. It works for art and history at least.
