There have been times throughout the history of the United States that we have made major mistakes that affect people’s lives for years and generations. Unfortunately the repair work that needs to happen often falls to later generations. In some cases the scars run so deeply that it is hard to fathom that healing will ever occur.
Two events in history that have had a major affect on my life are quite different from each other. One is the history of how the Native Americans were treated in our country. I live in an area of our state that is very close to an Indian Reservation. The reservation has a large casino and hotel and as a result the people of the reservation have been able to build many wonderful things for their community. They have a state of the art school for elementary through high school students. They have a beautiful government center and have developed their tribal courts as well as their tribal police force. They built a clinic, assisted living for the elderly and a museum to display their history and art work. The casino and hotel have provided many jobs to the area, however relationships between the Native Americans and the white people in the area continues to be tense. This affects the level of violence and hatred in the community I call home. The treaties established over one hundred and fifty years ago are still affecting my life today. Another event in our history that has affected my life is the Viet Nam war. My husband is a Viet Nam veteran and continues to suffer emotionally from that terrible time in our countries history. One thing that is helping him to heal is the support our troops campaign. He was greatly scarred by the way he was treated for serving in Viet Nam. He is actively involved to support our troops that are being sent over seas. He wants to make sure that the men and women serving our country today will not feel the rejection and hatred that was shown to him. In the past few months I have had the privilege to get to know some of the Native Americans that live close to me. They are involved in some of the support the troops efforts that my husband and I are working on. Historically many Native Americans have been involved with the military so they want to show that they continue to support our troops by writing letters, sending care packages and displaying signs on the properties of the reservation. Perhaps this type of joint effort will help the healing process as well as benefit the men and women who are serving our country to help preserve our way of life. We need to continue to support our troops in any way that we can.
