I used to think that art exists in a vacuum. I would judge each piece only according to my personal aesthetics, and would intentionally ignore anything that I heard about art history. The history of art seemed largely irrelevant to me. Who cared about the evolution of different art forms? All I cared about was the way that each painting looked. When I took a class on the history of modern Art, however, it completely changed my mind.
If you have never studied the history of art, you are in for a big surprise. You see, society and art interact very closely. Any art movement is usually a response to a social movement or historical event. By studying the history of art, you can gain a deeper appreciation of the art that you already know and love. In addition to this, you can discover new art that you might never have come across otherwise. The history of art is one of the most fascinating areas of academic inquiry. It should be required for any student in a major college. While I was studying it, I got so fascinated by the history of art that I actually contemplated getting an art history degree. Although I knew that an art history degree had limited employment potential, I felt that if I just followed my dream, something would work out for me.
It was one of my good friends that convinced me otherwise. He told me that I should study the history of art as much as I wanted to, but should make sure to get a degree in a field that I could get employed in. He pointed out to me that there is no reason that I cannot study the history of art on my own. Taking courses in a college or university can be helpful, but ultimately all you really need are books and time. The key was to get a degree in something that would give me money and free time. That way, I would have plenty of leisure time to pursue all of my other intellectual interests.
Sometimes I feel bad that I did not major in the history of contemporary Art. It would have been nice to be able to spend all my time studying a subject that I love so much. But my job makes me pretty happy, and I still do have a lot of time to appreciate art. There is a great museum downtown that I visit almost every weekend.
