Globe Arizona

The south of Arizona has impressive mountainous scenery and a fascinating history. People searched for gold, fought gunfights and battled with the Apache and Cochise tribes. Globe Arizona, the county seat of Gila County, was a significant part of the region's growth, having been established as a camp for the many miners and prospectors that converged there in the 1870s. The economy still benefits from mining and tourists like to visit the area to learn about the history. The city is situated in the Tonto National Forest, a protected area of great value. The area has lots of lodge accommodation and many campsites and RV parks.

Early prospectors found silver across the region and clashed with the Apaches who were eventually forced from their traditional lands around Globe Arizona and New Mexico on to the nearby San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation in 1871. The reservation was once lived in by the famous Apache Chief, Geronimo. Today, visitors like to go on the Apache Trail and learn about their culture. The Jii Celebration takes place every October, when the current Apache population demonstrates art and crafts, food and clothing.

The area enjoyed a boom when mining became mechanized and there were fortunes to be made. The silver was all taken by 1890 and copper mining began, a successful enterprise, which continues today. Ranching is also a major contributor to the profitability of Globe Arizona. The city celebrates Copper Dust Stampede Day in April with parades, dancing and music and a barbeque.

There are many tourist favorites in the region, including the Tonto National Monument, which is located 30 miles north of Globe Arizona. There is an opportunity to see desert cactus and wildflowers and many species of animals, including deer, mountain lion, coyote, lizards and rattlesnakes. There is a Visitors Center, a museum, picnic spots and trails.

Nature lovers will also appreciate the Boyce Thompson Arboretum State Park, which lies 20 miles to the west of the city at the foot of the Picketpost Mountains. This has become a haven for researchers into plants and visitors enjoy walking through the 35 acres of garden that has been created from the desert. There are over 800 varieties of cacti and numerous trees and shrubs from all over the world Examples of these can be bought from the Visitor Center.

The combination of frontier history and wonderful scenery makes the area very popular with tourists. There are cities close to Globe Arizona that are of interest too, such as Tucson and Phoenix.
