When I was a little kid, I always loved making forts. I suppose it is a pretty central occupation among the young. In my case, it was more of an obsession. I would go about making play tents with my sister. We would take all the pillows off the couch, mattresses off of any bed we could get to, and sheets out of the linen closet. Sometimes, we wouldn't go that far, but when we could get away with it, we definitely would. Making a good play tent was the most important thing, after all. We would worry about the consequences later. The first thing was to make the fort.
My dad actually built us a playhouse when I was about 6 years old. Usually, he wasn't a very crafty guy. He was not all that into making things, but my mom convinced him. She was too sick of us making our giant play tents and messing up the house. We were a little distractable, and didn't tend to clean up after ourselves all that well. We would leave the play tents sitting around, and my mom would have to wash up all the linens again. She punished us, and sometimes we behaved, but we were always lured back by the thrill of making forts. Now playhouses are very cool. If you are a little kid, having a permanent fort of your own is like owning a yacht for a rich businessman. It was a pretty classy structure to. We could play house inside, or we could sit up on the roof and watch TV. My dad even put up a mattress on top of the roof so that we could comfortably layabout up there. Nevertheless, part of the thrill of play tents is making things. After awhile, we got kind of listless. We didn't exactly abandon the playhouse, but it was no longer our central occupation. When we were in there, it was mostly to smuggle in supplies for play tents. We would take pillows, blankets, towels, and anything else we could find, one thing at a time. Then, when my parents were away or my mom was taking a nap, we would break them out and make a play tent. We could put one together, play with it, and hide it back away all in the space of 10 minutes. Maybe they never noticed, or maybe they tolerated it quietly. After all, at least we weren't making a mess anymore.
