We were not exactly a very outdoorsy family when I was growing up. We were actually a typical urban family. We barely ever got out of the city, and when we did, it was only to stay in a hotel somewhere else. Although I asked my parents over and over again, we never did any camping. I was fascinated by the pilgrims and their experiences, and by the early settlers in this country, but I never got to have more than the smallest taste of the great outdoors.
Little House on the Prairie was my escape from the city. I know the adventures of Laura Ingalls Wilder did not exactly accurately depict early American life, but for me it was fantastic anyway. I saw practically every Little House on the Prairie episode when I was a kid. From beginning to end, I watched all of them. The great thing about the serious was that you did not have to see every episode for it to make sense. The more you knew about the characters, the better a was, but even on your first time watching, you could follow along. Every episode was different, and you rarely had to know what happened before to be able to stick with it. My little sister hated Little House on the Prairie. I could never get her to watch it. When I was growing up, I wanted to dress up like early settlers and play make-believe games with her, but she was never interested in it. She was much more interested in rocket ships and time travel than Little House on the Prairies. We would fight about it all the time. Neither of us ever wanted to watch what the other wanted to see on tv. Sometimes it could get quite ugly, although when I look back on it we weren't fighting about anything that important. I guess that is just how it is to be a kid when you are close in age. That is why I was so happy when she got me the Little House on the Prairie DVD box set a few years ago. I hadn't really thought about in years, and it was probably something I wouldn't have bought on my own. Nevertheless, I was overjoyed to get it. It brought back so many memories just to think about it, and I could hardly wait to play it. You can imagine my surprise when my sister decided to watch it with me!
