We live in a society of violence. This does not mean that we need to be afraid to leave our homes, but we do need to be aware of our surroundings and to take precautions when we are out and about. There are small things that we can each do to insure our safety. These are safety tips that are basically common sense, but are worth reviewing for ourselves as well as for our children. How many times have you watched the news or read a newspaper headline about a crime of violence and thought, that just does not make sense. The victim of violence is not responsible for the criminal’s actions, but they do need to help keep themselves aware of the surroundings they are in.

There are times that simple things elude us in regards to safety. The other day I looked at my daughter’s key chain lying on the kitchen counter. She had so many things hanging together that it was impossible to distinguish one key from another. In a dark parking lot or door way to an apartment building having to fumble through a crowded key chain can keep you distracted in a potentially dangerous situation. I asked my daughter what all she had on the key chain. She went through the different items. She had her car keys, which includes a remote keyless entry, however if you cannot find the button it is not very helpful. She also had two apartment keys, one for the outside door and apartment and one for her mailbox. She also had a key for her locker at the gym and two large key chain fobs that where hooked together. One was a large coin that was a souvenir from Las Vegas and the other was a rabbit’s foot that a friend had given her. She also had a key to our house and one for her brother’s apartment. We all have pets so when someone is on vacation we go into each other’s homes to care for the animals.

I told my daughter that she needed to reduce the size of her key chain so that she would be able to quickly access a key if needed. I also encouraged her to place the keys to our house and her brother’s apartment on a separate key chain that she did not carry around with her. If she would lose the ring of keys it would cause safety concerns for many people. She never considered the implications of carrying so many keys together. She admitted that there are times she also takes a key from work to get in on weekends, and she puts this on the key chain also. If she would lose that it would mean an entire building having to have locks changed. Protecting yourself by insuring you are not fumbling with multiple keys is one small example of things we can do to be safer.
