Wine Making: A Lost Art

With so many wines being produced commercially, the art of wine making has all but been forgotten. But among some wine connoisseurs, this long lost art is making a comeback. With many community centers and local wineries offering classes in wine making to those who wish to learn this fine art, more and more people are discovering the joys of being able to serve their own brews at the dinner table. If you’d like to understand the basics of wine making, then take a look below at the special tips we’ve brought you for making your very own wines in the comfort of your home.

The Fruit

The most important part of wine making is choosing the right fruit. If you have decided to make grape wine, then it is important to choose your grapes carefully. Be sure that they are ripe, but not bruised; firm, but not too hard. If you are making a red wine, then you will be using red or black grapes. It is important to remember that the darker the grapes you choose are, typically the sweeter the juice will be. White grapes are used to make white wines, and you should choose the ones you use in your wine making just as carefully as the red or black. Grapes that are too soft, or have started to turn brown, will create a wine that is bitter instead of sweet.

Maybe grape wine isn’t right for you. No worries, there are many other fruits that you can use in your wine making endeavors that will produce a fine vintage perfect for any dinner table. Some of the more popular fruit wines include apple wine and strawberry wines. In each, the fruit you use must be chosen just as carefully as if you were using grapes. This is also true for wine making processes that include fruit like peaches and other berries. The main thing to remember is to choose fruit that isn’t too ripe, and that has no bruises or soft spots.

The Equipment

The next most important part of wine making is choosing the right equipment. Although you can certainly use items found commonly in most homes, it is best to use special wine making equipment that can be bought in specialty stores and at wineries around the country. This special equipment is specifically made to help bring out the fullest flavor in your wines possible, as well as to help ensure that the fermentation process is as sterile as possible.

Wine making is a fine tradition indeed, and it is a wonderful art that anyone can learn regardless of age. Start your own wine making traditions now, and your family could be enjoying their own special vintages for generations to come.
