I have been going to an indoor shooting range for about two years. I started it because I had been attacked, and wanted to learn how to defend myself. Training in using guns seemed like the best way to do this. Soon, however, the shooting range stopped being a chore and began to be a pleasure. Rifle shooting is now one of my favorite hobbies. Unfortunately, until recently things were getting a little bit stale. That is when I discovered clay pigeon shooting.

If you have never gone shooting clay pigeons, you have really missed out on something. Even if you are an experienced marksman, clay pigeon shooting will really test your skill. Shooting clay pigeon targets is one of the hardest things that I have ever had to do. I've gotten to the point where I'm a pretty good shot. I can hit, at 20 yards, almost anything that I want to as long as it is standing still. Clay pigeon shooting, however, adds a whole new dimension to my marksmanship. It demands that I learn to think in three dimensions, be able to shoot straight up into the air, and anticipate the motion of my targets. If you ever want to be a really good marksman, you need to be able to learn how to shoot a moving target. Clay pigeon shooting will show you just that.

Your average shooting range, however, does not have the room for clay pigeon shooting. If you really want to get serious with the sport, you probably have to join a shooting club. There are other alternatives to give you the targets that simulate clay pigeon shooting, but they do not get the real feel of it. Part of what is so fun about clay pigeon shooting is how quickly and how high the disks fly out of the clay pigeon trap. In the more miniaturized versions of the sport, you do not have this factor as part of the experience.

Then again, you can do a homemade version of clay pigeon shooting as long as you are pretty careful and have a lot of room. I have actually done clay pigeon shooting in abandoned fields before, and it seems to be pretty safe. Of course, if you want to do this safely, you have to be way off in the country. Otherwise, it can be quite easy for you to accidentally hurt someone.
