One of the first steps in deciphering the terms thrown about in infertility is learning more about infertility and the treatments offered. Fertility Physicians: What Does This Mean?

Fertility physicians or specialists are doctors that work with infertile couples. A doctor that has been trained in gynecology can call themselves a fertility specialist, and they may have taken additional courses in regards to infertility or even done additional training in the field. Many fertility physicians are gynecologists that have found themselves pulled in the direction of treating infertile couples.

A Reproductive Endocrinologist is physician that has been board certified in the training of the endocrine system. These fertility physicians have taken and additional two to three years training in the endocrine system which is the fundamental system that controls hormones in both men and women. This doctor also has taken and passed both oral and written exams in order to be certified.

Some fertility clinics combine the capabilities of both a Reproductive Endocrinologist and an experienced gynecologist. These clinics offer clients a full service clinic where all tests can be performed, other than surgical, and these clinics are open seven days a week in order to be available for any medical needs that may arise.

For some patients that have started their evaluation with their gynecologist, moving up to a clinic that specializes in infertility is a big leap. If a patient feels that their individual problem is best addressed by a Reproductive Endocrinologist it is important to find one in their area.

Another consideration for patients is if they have insurance that includes any coverage for infertility treatments and what fertility physicians accept that type of insurance. Sometimes the decision on what type of doctor to see comes down to how the doctor interacts with the couple. Some couples find themselves more comfortable with a particular doctor and that is why it is very important to always interview the fertility physicians that are being considered.
