Architectural Garden Lighting

Architectural lighting is used to highlight unique design elements of a home, lawn, or professional building. Architectural lighting is generally positioned near entryway arches, columns, textured exteriors, statues, ponds, or structural features.

When used in a garden setting, architectural lighting can enhance the beauty of a garden, swimming pool, hot tub, patio or deck.

One of the more popular styles of architectural garden lighting is the coach light. This lighting is reminiscent of the old-time gas lights that lit the path of streets and driveways. The coach light sits on top of a pole and emits a dazzling light through clear panels. Coach lights can be installed along the side of a driveway or at the corners of an outdoor deck. They can also be placed in a garden or used to enhance a flowerbed or walk path.

Hanging lanterns are another popular and affordable style of architectural garden lighting. Hanging lanterns attach to a pole that is inserted into the ground via a spike. Today's hanging lanterns are works of art and made from durable materials such as high-impact plastic, stainless steel or copper. They are easy to maintain and oftentimes incorporate the use of solar lights, making them an economical and environmentally-friendly choice.

Walk lights are frequently used to enhance the beauty of flowerbeds, while providing illumination along a walking path. Walk lights are low to the ground and usually attached to a pole or sit on top of a spike, which is inserted into the ground. Many walk lights now incorporate the use of solar lighting, which eliminates the need for bulky cables or electrical boxes.

Uplights are a good choice for architectural garden lighting. These lights are inserted into the ground and use a light source that is directed upwards. Uplights are best used to showcase trees and other tall plantings, as well as to light an entryway or arch entrance.

Floodlights are similar to uplights; however, their light can be directed upwards or downwards. Floodlights are used to illuminate entranceways, and to highlight exterior architectural designs such as archways or landscape designs.

There are many choices of architectural garden lighting available on the market. Architectural garden lighting is available through specialty stores, lawn and garden stores, and on-line.
