To some people, they are harmless fun and very glamorous and to others, they are dens of vice but gambling casinos are here to stay. They are usually to be found in hotel resorts and there are also casino cruise ships, horse trackside casinos and some gaming rooms still even exist on riverboats in Louisiana. Most people have a casual dalliance with gambling; whilst on vacation and others make a profession of it. The bigger concerns usually have live entertainment too.

Whatever the game, it's worth bearing in mind that the house always has the advantage and the odds are stacked against the player. The city in Monaco is a well known playground for the rich and famous and much time is spent at the many gambling casinos there. It is the sophisticated setting for Ian Fleming's first James Bond story, Casino Royale. Scenes in the 1995 Bond movie, GoldenEye were filmed there too.

Another famous destination for gamblers is Las Vegas, which enjoys the unrestrictive gambling laws of Nevada. Gambling casinos, such as Caesars Palace on the Las Vegas Strip are the resort's lifeblood. Based on a Roman Empire theme, the hotel and casino is lavishly designed with waterfalls, swimming pools and statues. The singer Andy Williams performed on its opening night in 1966. Other big star names have entertained here, including Diana Ross, David Copperfield, Judy Garland, Liberace, Cher and Frank Sinatra. The Las Vegas Grand Prix formula one race event was held in the car park in 1981 and 1982. World Championship boxing matches have been staged here and the great champion Joe Louis was a greeter for the casino.

Casinos run by Native Americans have become a common feature in America. The community took the advantage of being able to operate gambling casinos outside of the normal regulations, as they are on Native American reservations or traditional, tribal grounds. This is an important resource for the community, bringing in revenue that has been used to improve social conditions.

There is a debate in the UK currently with regard to contracts being awarded for more unrestricted gambling. A so called super casino will be built in Manchester and others may follow. This, combined with an increase in online gambling, has prompted concerns over gambling addiction.
