Nicknamed the Furniture Capital of the World, High Point North Carolina is a thriving center for business and culture. The furniture industry is a major part of the local economy and the High Point Market, held every other year, is the largest furniture industrial trade show in the world.
The city has plenty green space and leisure activities and families can have a great day out at the High Point City Lake Park. Fishing boats and canoes can be rented for the 340 acre lake and there are paddle boats too. The kids can splash around in the outdoor pool and waterslide and there is colorfully decorated carousel and a ride on train. Other amenities include a playground, miniature golf, gymnasium and sheltered picnic areas. The history of the area can be explored at the High Point Historical Park. Other exhibits tell the story of the first Native American settlers. Hands on activities are encouraged and there are historic buildings in the grounds, dating from the end of the 18th century to the early 1800s.
One of the legacies of the local gold mining industry is the Historic Castle McCulloch Gold Mill, built in 1832. The building was used to process gold that came in from the various mining operations. Visitors can tour the impressive buildings and grounds. The highlight features are the Great Hall and the Crystal Garden with Magnificent Chandelier.
The Piedmont Environmental Center is a valuable resource for High Point North Carolina. The center employs expert naturalists and there are educational facilities for families, schools and youth groups. Learning is done in the classroom and out in the field. There is the opportunity to go hiking on eleven miles of trails or to go canoeing or kayaking. The nature preserve covers 375 acres and is next to the High Point City Lake. It's educational but great fun too and the program includes learning how to identify plants, mushrooms and minerals.
The city is fortunate in having its own professional theatre company. The High Point Theatre hosts the productions of the North Carolina Shakespeare Festival and other classic and contemporary works are produced. An outreach program consists of classes, workshops and seminars for adults and children in the local community. Many plays for children are presented, encouraging families from High Point North Carolina to spend time at the theatre.
