Large retail chains can be a great resource, because they regularly go through stock, weeding out items they're discontinuing. When going to places like these, always ask to speak to the guy in charge, like the manager. Call ahead to see when you can meet with the manager. The stores are usually happy to provide some canned goods, rice, flour and many non-perishable items.
