I recently began working at an office for the first time in my life. After all of the relatively laidback jobs I have had in my life, I had to say that this new position left me in sort of a culture shock. The 9-5 world is very different from any other I have been a part of and I can not say that I am a fan of it.
Mostly I am aggravated by the conformity that is expected of employees in the office realm. Everyone here pretty much dresses the same and personality is to be left at the door. I have been reduced to business casual attire and I feel like a sellout for sure. If I was able to change one thing, just one thing about this place, it would be the shoes. I would rally for a pro tennis shoes office. I love wearing tennis shoes and I have always been able to wear them at every other job I have ever had. I feel like I am suddenly twenty years older every time I have to put on the boring black flats.
I think that happy employees are productive employees. I know that I would be more productive if I was able to wear my tennis shoes to work every day. I may even be between twenty to thirty percent more productive! I think that is a reasonable exchange.
Wearing tennis shoes would not only be for the purpose of personal comfort. It would also help build morale around here. Maybe it would make us subordinates feel freer and therefore less resentful of the ones whose orders we must follow. Perhaps. I have a feeling that I will never know.
I have big feet for a lady and it can be very difficult to find shoes that fit, are affordable, and look cute. I have, on occasion, had to buy men’s shoes. This, of course, only applies to tennis shoes and the like. They just don’t make cute boots for guys yet.
If I ever quit this place I think that it would be fun to blame it on the required attire. “Sir, I have to leave because I miss my tennis shoes and I can not discontinue my relationship with them. You have put me in an uncomfortable situation from which I must escape.” I seriously doubt they would ask too many questions after that.
