If you were a teenager in the eighties, chances are you owned a pair of leg warmers. This odd fashion item had its introduction to the world through dancers, who would wear them to keep their legs warm when going to and from dance class or to hold in the heat before their leg muscles were properly warmed up during practice. But just like ballet style shoes, which were also popular in the eighties and originated from the shoes worn by ballet dancers, leg warmers slowly leaked out of the dance studio and onto the streets of every city in America.
There were many strange fashion trends created in the eighties. Some unforgettable trends include stirrup pants, big hair and jelly shoes. While we can hope these past fashions never make a comeback, all it would take is a high profile celebrity to be seen in public wearing a pair of leg warmers and the trend could re-ignite and spread like wildfire again. Many people believe that the popularity of leg warmers can be traced back to the movie Flashdance and its blending of traditional ballet with an edgy, cool style of dancing where leg warmers, rather than remaining in the practice studio, become a main component of the performer’s dance outfit.
In order for leg warmers to come into fashion again, a few other things would have to happen as well. Wide, chunky shoes would have to take a vacation to make way for the return of smaller dance type shoes that conform to the foot. Because everyone who has ever worn a pair of leg warmers knows that platform shoes do not look right beneath a pair of tight, slouchy leg warmers. Another trend that would have to end would be wide bottom flared pants that are quite popular right now. Also known as modified bell bottoms, these pants have too much material at the ankle to fit well underneath a pair of legwarmers without bunching. Pants that are tapered provide a much better base for leg warmers.
There seems to be an eventual return for all old trends of the past, so it’s not unrealistic to hope for a re-emergence of leg warmers as a hot fashion trend once again. But as with all recycled trends there will likely be updates. Maybe the new leg warmers won’t be knit, but instead made of leather. Maybe they will be sheer. Maybe they will be decorated with beads and other fanciful trinkets. We can’t really know. All we can do is keep reading our fashion magazines and watching celebrity photos.
