Backwater lakes are just what their name implies, backwater that has spilled over from the main river and has now formed a lake. The Atchafalaya Basin is the biggest river delta in the United States. It begins with the Mississippi River and the Red River and covers a large expanse of swamps and canals. It covers approximately three thousand acres and contains a variety of water depth. Located outside Saint Joseph, LA, the lake offers fishing piers, boat ramps, boat rentals, and swimming areas. Bass fishing in this region remains good all year but the summer months also offer the rest of the family an opportunity to enjoy the amenities.
