Sometimes, it can be difficult to remember how bad global poverty is. Even poverty in the US escapes our attention much of the time. After all, most of us have a lot to do. You go about your life, going to your job 40 hours or more a week, relaxing as much as you can on the weekends and after work, and trying to raise a family. With all of that on you plate, the global war on property can seem pretty remote from you. Yet it is important to remember that we are all responsible for combating global poverty. Millions and millions are impoverished all over the world, through no fault of their own. Although it may not immediately affect us, one day it will.
Environmental issues have really been upstaging global poverty in recent years, but they are closely linked. When people are impoverished, they cannot afford birth control, which causes the population to increase more. This leads to even worse world overpopulation which eventually leads to more economic troubles. Poor countries also can not afford the same level of sanitation, running dirtier power plants, polluting the rivers more, deforesting more, and in general being forced to put a significant mark on the global environment. If we are going to get our environment under control, we also have to get the forces of poverty under control. To do that, we have to all work together. The saddest thing about it is that world poverty is something we could prevent. There are enough resources in the world to make a big dent in global poverty, or even eliminate it within a decade. No one is doing it, however. We would rather spend money on defense, researching new technology, and entertainment. That is what you and me have to step in and take up the slack. Giving money to charitable organizations is one of the most important things that we can do to help global poverty. It is, however, not the only thing. A lot of people throw money at these issues, but they never go away. The key is to have as many people as possible get involved. The more people who are the confronting issues head-on, lending their time to combat social ills, the faster the social ills will be addressed. You and me can make a difference, but we have to act now. Get involved. It will make you feel good, and you will be making a difference.
