American Currency
I was chatting with a friend from Australia one day, and she commented on how American currency isn’t much fun. I must say that I have to agree with her. For the longest time our money was white and green. Now you can find other colors subtly woven into the newer designs of our American currency, but it still has almost the same look it had before. Though it is getting more fun to look at, it has a long way to go before it is anything like the money Aussies carry around with them. Another thing she noticed about American currency is that it is very easy to tear. The currency she uses is made of something that can almost be described as plastic. It makes it more durable, and it lasts quite a while longer. On top of that, her currency is brightly decked out in all sorts of colors, and is a lot of fun to look at. Though money is not made to be fun, you have to admire the way they have put it together. They do also have various things that are truly Australian on their money, and perhaps that is part of the charm for me. I can’t wait to visit so I can bring home some of my own.
American currency is what it is though, and it has not changed much because it has worked well for us. There are some things that have disappeared, and other things that aren’t used very much. Though there are two-dollar bills floating around out there, we tend not to use them very much. The same can be said for dollar coins and fifty-cent pieces. Though these units of American currency were released to be used as we us the one, five, ten, and twenty-dollar bills, they just did not catch on for some reason.
The latest thing I have heard about changes in American currency is that some think we need to get rid of the penny. I’m not sure if that is a good idea or not. I don’t think it’s going to happen any time soon, but I guess it’s a possibility. There are many who will fight this though, as the penny is an important piece of American currency to them. I know many people save them, and they are something that many people collect. This would also mean a change in the way everything is priced, and that may take years to get used to.
