They don't actually affect your workout.

The stride you take is equivalent to the average person's walking stride, so these models are very comfortable for most people. Even with these basic models, you can still easily make adjustment for steadily more challenging workouts. They work with magnetic resistance, unlike other brands which run on electricity.

If you think you need some bells and whistles to keep you more interested in regular exercise, there's an Ironman elliptical for you. They cost about $1200 (US), but if it helps encourage you to better health, it's a cheap price to pay. And it probably is cheaper than the cost of the gas you need to drive to and from a health club.

Before you buy any Ironman elliptical – or any other major piece of exercise equipment, for that matter – take your time in shopping. Compare not only prices, but warranties, shipping costs and guarantees. Although you could try to buy a used Ironman elliptical, you never quite know where it's been, and there usually aren't any guarantees with it. You might even have to go pick it up yourself.

That way, you can much more easily monitor your pulse rate and keep yourself from accidentally hurting your body in trying to help it. There are also LCD displays and programmable exercise routines.
